Why Romania

Why Romania Is Europe’s Best Place to See Brown Bears

Romania is home to an estimated 6,000–8,000 brown bears, the largest population in the European Union. Most live in the dense beech and spruce forests of the Carpathian Mountains, a short drive from Brașov, which makes wild bear encounters unusually accessible.

Guided evening trips take you to purpose-built hides at the forest edge, where bears regularly appear at dusk. Combine one with Transylvania’s castles, Saxon villages and mountain roads and you have one of Europe’s most memorable trips.

A destination for every season

Bear hides operate while bears are active, roughly from spring to autumn. The rest of the year Romania is just as rewarding: wildlife tracking hikes in the snow, Christmas markets in Brașov and Sibiu, castles, museums and city tours that run all year.

Watch responsibly

Choose tours led by licensed guides or rangers, stay silent inside the hide and never feed or approach bears, not even the ones that occasionally wander into towns. Responsible tourism helps protect the forests these animals depend on.

Bear Watching and Travel in Romania: FAQ

When is the best time to see bears in Romania?

Bear hides operate while bears are active, roughly from spring to autumn; bears hibernate in the coldest months. Evening trips at dusk give the best chance of a sighting. Outside the season, wildlife tracking hikes, castles and city tours run all year.

Is bear watching in Romania safe?

Yes, when you go with an organised tour. Guides take small groups to purpose-built hides and explain the rules beforehand. Never approach or feed a bear in the wild or in towns such as Brașov, where bears occasionally appear.

What else is there to do in Romania besides bear watching?

Plenty: Bran, Peleș and Corvin castles, the medieval citadel of Sighișoara, Saxon fortified churches, the Transfăgărășan mountain road, the Danube Delta, Bucovina’s painted monasteries and Bucharest’s museums and walking tours.

How far is Brașov from Bucharest?

About 170 km, roughly 3 hours by road (more with weekend traffic) or a similar time by train. Brașov is the best base for bear watching and for Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress.

Can I visit Bran and Peleș castles in one day from Bucharest?

Yes. Organised day trips of about 12 hours cover Peleș Castle in Sinaia, Bran Castle and Brașov’s old town. Check opening days before booking, as Peleș Castle is usually closed on Mondays.

Do I book the tours with Bears in Romania?

No. We are an independent guide, not a tour operator. Each tour links to a single partner (Viator), which handles payment, confirmation and cancellations. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How do cancellations or changes to bookings work?

We do not manage bookings or process payments. Because experiences are booked through the official Viator platform, the cancellation policy and deadlines (the vast majority offer flexible or free options up to 24 hours before) depend exclusively on each local provider. We recommend checking the specific conditions directly on Viator before completing your purchase.
