The Must-See Castles and Fortresses

Each of these makes a great half or full day, and most tours combine two or three of them.

Bran Castle

Perched on a rock about 30 km from Brașov, Bran is marketed worldwide as “Dracula’s Castle”, although its link with Vlad the Impaler is slim. Inside you will find the rooms of Queen Marie of Romania, who made it her residence. It gets very busy: arrive early or go with a tour that has timed entry.

Peleș Castle

Built for King Carol I in the Carpathian resort of Sinaia, Peleș is a neo-Renaissance palace with some of the most lavish interiors in Europe. It is usually closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly.

Corvin Castle

In Hunedoara, the Gothic castle of the Hunyadi family is reached by a dramatic wooden bridge and looks exactly like a fairy-tale fortress. It is further west, so most visitors come from Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu or Alba Iulia.

Râșnov Fortress and the fortified churches

Râșnov’s hilltop citadel sits between Brașov and Bran and is easy to add to a Bran visit. Around Brașov and Sibiu, Saxon villages such as Prejmer, Viscri and Biertan protected themselves with fortified churches, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bran or Peleș: Which Should You Visit?

If you only have time for one, choose Peleș for opulent interiors and royal history, and Bran for the medieval setting and the Dracula legend. From Bucharest, a single day trip covers both, plus Brașov’s old town; from Brașov, Bran is only a short drive away.

Tips for Visiting Transylvania’s Castles

Check opening days before you go, as some castles close one day a week and hours change with the season. Weekends and summer afternoons are the busiest times. Comfortable shoes are essential: most castles involve steep paths and narrow staircases.

Transylvania Castles: FAQ

Is Bran Castle really Dracula’s castle?

Not really. Bran is promoted as Dracula’s Castle because it resembles the castle described by Bram Stoker, but there is little evidence that Vlad the Impaler lived there. It is still one of Romania’s most atmospheric castles.

Can I visit Bran and Peleș castles in one day?

Yes. Guided day trips from Bucharest of about 12 hours cover both castles and Brașov’s old town. From Brașov, the two castles are about an hour apart by car.

How do I get to Bran Castle from Brașov?

Bran is about 30 km from Brașov, roughly 40–45 minutes by car. Local buses run from Brașov, or you can join a tour that combines Bran with Râșnov Fortress.

Which is the most beautiful castle in Romania?

Peleș is usually considered the most beautiful inside, while Corvin Castle has the most dramatic exterior. Bran is the most famous.

Which castles can I visit from Bucharest in one day?

Peleș Castle in Sinaia (about 2 hours away) and Bran Castle (about 3 hours) fit in one day, often together with Râșnov Fortress or Brașov. Corvin Castle is too far for a comfortable day trip from Bucharest.

Are castle entrance tickets included in the tours?

It depends on the tour: some include entrance fees and others don’t. Check the “What’s included” section on the booking platform before you book.
