Bear Watching in Romania Month by Month

The bears’ year sets the calendar. Exact opening and closing dates depend on each operator and on the weather (a late snowfall or a mild autumn can move them by weeks), so always check the dates on the tour page before booking.

What bears do and what you can expect, season by season
Months What bears are doing Bear watching
December to February Hibernating in their dens; cubs are born in mid-winter Hides closed
March and April Waking up, usually males first; mothers with cubs come out later First hides open, depending on snow
May and June Mothers with cubs and mating season Good season, long evenings
July and August Feeding on grass, plants and the first berries High season, late sunsets
September to November Eating as much as possible before winter Often the most reliable; the season ends with the cold

Spring: Bears Wake Up

Bears leave their dens hungry after the winter. Males usually appear first, while mothers with cubs born during the winter come out later, once the cubs are strong enough to follow them.

Late spring is a special time to visit: the forest turns green again, cubs are small and playful and the evenings are getting longer. The first weeks of the season depend on how much snow is left in the mountains, so plan for May if you want more certainty.

Summer: Long Evenings in the Forest

Summer is high season for travel in Transylvania and bears are active and easy to find. Because the sun sets late (around 9 pm in June), evening tours also start and finish late, so plan a light dinner or eat after the tour.

This is also the busiest time, so book a few days ahead if you have fixed dates. To choose the area, see our guide on where to see bears in Romania.

Autumn: Often the Most Reliable Season

From September, bears enter a feeding frenzy to build up fat for winter, eating beech nuts, acorns, fruit and berries for many hours a day. That makes them very active and sightings from the hides are frequent.

Autumn also brings fewer tourists, golden forests and cool evenings. As the days get shorter, tours start earlier in the afternoon. The season ends when the cold arrives, usually in late autumn.

Winter: Do Bears Hibernate in Romania?

Yes. Romanian brown bears spend the coldest months in their dens, roughly from December to March. Some bears stay active longer in mild winters or wake up briefly, but bear-watching hides do not operate in this season.

Winter is still a great time to visit the area around Brașov. You can join a wildlife tracking hike to read bear, wolf and lynx tracks in the snow, ski in Poiana Brașov or visit Bran, Peleș and Râșnov without the summer crowds. Plan your bears for the next spring and use our Discover Romania guide for the rest of the trip.

The Best Time of Day to See Bears

Whatever the month, dusk is the moment. Bears spend the hottest hours resting in the forest and come out to feed as the light fades. That is why bear-watching tours leave Brașov in the afternoon and wait in the hide until sunset.

  • Spring and autumn: bring warm layers, a hat and gloves. Evenings in the mountains are cold.
  • Summer: a light jacket and insect repellent; the tour ends late.
  • Always: dark, quiet clothes, no strong perfume and a camera or phone with the sound off.

Best Time to See Bears in Romania: FAQ

What is the best month to see bears in Romania?

Late summer and autumn, from August to October, are often the most reliable, because bears feed intensively before winter. May and June are ideal if you want to see mothers with cubs.

Can you see bears in Romania in winter?

Not in the hides: bears hibernate roughly from December to March and bear-watching tours stop. In winter you can join a wildlife tracking hike to look for tracks in the snow instead.

When do bears wake up from hibernation in Romania?

Usually in March or April, depending on the snow. Males tend to come out first and mothers with young cubs a few weeks later.

What time of day is best to see bears?

Dusk. Bears come out of the forest to feed as the light fades, so tours wait in the hide until sunset. In summer that means finishing late in the evening.

Do I need to book a bear-watching tour in advance?

In July and August it is worth booking a few days ahead, as hides have limited places. In spring and autumn there is usually more availability.

Is it cold in a bear hide?

In spring and autumn, yes: you sit still for a couple of hours in the mountains after sunset. Bring warm layers, a hat and gloves, even if the day was mild.
