How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle

The easiest way to visit Bran Castle from Bucharest is an organised day trip, which usually takes 12–13 hours and often adds Peleș Castle and Brașov. You can also drive (about three hours each way) or take the train to Brașov and a bus to Bran. Our guide to Transylvania’s castles explains what to see at Bran and nearby.

  • By public transport: train to Brașov (about three hours), then a bus to Bran (about an hour).
  • Plan 1–2 hours for the castle visit; summer weekends are the busiest.
  • Tickets are sold at the entrance and on the castle’s official website; prices and hours can change.

Three Ways to Get from Bucharest to Bran

All three options work as a day trip, but they differ in comfort, price and how much you see on the way:

Bucharest to Bran Castle: options compared
Option Total time Good to know
Organised day trip 12–13 hours Transport and guide included; often with Peleș and Brașov
By car About 3 hours each way Freedom to stop in Sinaia or Râșnov; weekend traffic on the main road
Train + bus About 4 hours each way The cheapest option, but a long day; sleeping in Brașov helps

Option 1: An Organised Day Trip from Bucharest

This is the most popular way to see Bran in a day. A guide picks you up in Bucharest, drives through the Prahova Valley and usually stops at Peleș Castle in Sinaia and the old town of Brașov as well. You do not have to worry about driving, parking or timetables.

Choose between private tours, more flexible and with hotel pick-up, and small-group tours, which are cheaper. Check whether castle tickets are included and how long you get at each stop. You will find more options in our guide to day trips from Bucharest.

Option 2: Driving from Bucharest to Bran

The usual route follows the Prahova Valley through Sinaia, then continues past Brașov or Râșnov to Bran. It takes about three hours without traffic, but the main road can be very busy on Friday afternoons and summer weekends.

Driving lets you stop at Peleș Castle in Sinaia on the way and at Râșnov Fortress, just 12 km from Bran. There is paid parking near the castle. In winter, check road conditions and remember that winter tyres are required on snow; our guide to Romania in winter has more tips.

Option 3: Train and Bus

Without a car, take a train from Bucharest Nord to Brașov (about three hours, several trains a day), then a local bus to Bran, which usually leaves from Brașov’s Bus Station 2 and takes about an hour. Check the timetables the day before, as frequencies change at weekends and out of season.

It is the cheapest option, but doing it all in one day is long. Sleeping a night in Brașov makes it much more relaxed and lets you see the old town too.

Tickets and Tips for Visiting Bran Castle

A few tips make the visit easier:

  • Tickets: buy them at the entrance or on the castle’s official website. Prices and opening hours change, so check them before you go.
  • Avoid the queues: arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially on summer weekends.
  • Time: plan 1–2 hours inside, plus time for the souvenir market at the foot of the castle.
  • Stairs: the castle has many narrow stairs and corridors, which can be difficult with reduced mobility or pushchairs.
  • Nearby: combine it with Râșnov Fortress (12 km) or Brașov’s old town (about 30 km).
