The History of Corvin Castle

In the 15th century, John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara), voivode of Transylvania and famous for his battles against the Ottomans, turned an older fortress into a grand Gothic residence. His son, Matthias Corvinus, became one of the best-known kings of Hungary, and the castle took its name from the family.

Later owners added Renaissance wings and halls, and the castle was restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it is a museum and one of Romania’s most visited monuments.

Legends: Vlad the Impaler and More

Like many Romanian castles, Corvin has its legends. One of the best known says that Vlad the Impaler, the real prince behind the Dracula myth, was held prisoner here. Historians do not agree on it, but the story is part of the castle’s appeal. To separate history from legend, read whether Bran is really Dracula’s castle.

The castle’s Gothic atmosphere has also made it a filming location for films and series, which adds to its popularity, especially around Halloween.

Hunedoara is in the west of Transylvania, so Corvin Castle fits best into a route between Sibiu and Timișoara or Cluj-Napoca. The easiest way to get there is by car; there are trains and buses to nearby Deva, and from there local transport to Hunedoara.

Nearby you can visit the hilltop Deva Fortress, the star-shaped citadel of Alba Iulia and the Dacian fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains, a UNESCO site. For a base with more to do, see our guide to things to do in Sibiu, and read how to get around Romania to plan the route.
