Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets Fortress
Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the Middle Ages. The town is built on hills above the meanders of the Yantra River, with houses that seem to hang over the cliffs.
The main sight is Tsarevets Fortress, with its walls, gates and the Patriarchal Cathedral at the top of the hill. In the old town, the Samovodska Charshia street is full of craft workshops and small shops.

Ruse and the Basarbovo Rock Monastery
Ruse, just across the Danube, is known for its elegant 19th- and early 20th-century buildings and is sometimes called the “Little Vienna” of Bulgaria. Many tours stop for a short walk in the centre.
Nearby, the Basarbovo Monastery is carved into a limestone cliff above a river valley and is still active. It is a peaceful stop on the way to or from Veliko Tarnovo.
Arbanasi
On a plateau just above Veliko Tarnovo, Arbanasi is a historic village of stone houses and old churches with richly painted interiors. Some tours include it as a short stop with views over Veliko Tarnovo.
Documents, Border and Money
Romania and Bulgaria are both members of the Schengen area, so there are usually no systematic border checks, but you must carry a valid passport or national ID card, and tour operators will ask for it. Read our guide to Romania’s entry requirements for more details.
Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026, so you will need euros rather than Romanian lei; cards are widely accepted in towns. See our guide to money in Romania for the Romanian side of the trip.
Guided Tour or Self-Drive?
A guided tour is the easiest option: it includes transport, the border crossing and a guide who explains the history of each stop. Private tours let you choose the pace and the stops.
If you drive, check that your rental company allows cross-border travel, pay the bridge toll and buy the Bulgarian electronic vignette for national roads before you drive on them. Read how to get around Romania for more driving tips.
