Sinaia Monastery and the Town

Sinaia Monastery, founded in the late 17th century, gave the town its name, inspired by Mount Sinai. It has an old church and a newer, larger one in the same courtyard.

The town itself grew as a royal and aristocratic resort, and you can still see elegant villas, a casino and parks along its streets. It is a pleasant place for a walk between the monastery and the castles.

Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni

A few kilometres north, in Bușteni, Cantacuzino Castle was built in the early 20th century for a wealthy Romanian prince in the neo-Romanian style. Its terraces look straight onto the cliffs of the Bucegi Mountains.

The castle has become even more popular since it appeared in the series Wednesday. Today it hosts exhibitions and a restaurant, and some tours combine it with Peleș and a wine tasting.

The Bucegi Mountains

From Sinaia and Bușteni, cable cars climb into the Bucegi Mountains, with plateaus, viewpoints and well-known rock formations such as the Sphinx and Babele. In summer there are many marked trails; in winter, Sinaia and the nearby resorts of Azuga and Predeal have ski slopes. See our guide to skiing in Romania.

Mountain weather changes quickly: check the forecast and whether the cable cars are running, stay on marked trails and follow the instructions of the mountain rescue service and local authorities.
